Babbacombe is a delightful small shingle beach set beneath the cliffs at Babbacombe Downs. The promenade on Babbacombe Downs is known as the highest in England and has spectacular views.
An interesting place to explore with rock pools, cliffs and walks. The beach is popular with local families and holiday makers, diving groups and fishing enthusiasts. It is also a favoured haven for weekend sailors.
The picturesque lane down to the beach is very steep, but if you don’t feel like a walk you can always take the Babbacombe Cliff Railway. Operating since 1926 Babbacombe Cliff Railway is a funicular railway from Babbacombe Downs to Oddicombe Beach.
"From Babbacombe Downs there is a fantastic viewpoint from which to enjoy the sight of both Lyme Bay and across to the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site. It is also here where the Babbacombe Cliff Railway was opened in 1926 connecting the Downs with Oddicombe Beach. It was built down a fault line between the older Devonian grey limestone and a block of younger Permian red breccia."
