Top Ten Tips

  1. Remember to close windows and doors when the heating or air conditioning in on, otherwise you will be heating or cooling the outdoors too!

  2. Fit timers on equipment that needn’t be left on out of hours, to save having to remember to switch them off everyday. Such as printers, vending and drinks machines, audio machines etc.

  3. Produce an energy policy for your school, including an Eco-code (see Eco-schools), targets, and everything from free or low cost measures that could be done on site through to ideas to install renewables on the school site.

  4. Make use of natural daylight, by drawing blinds or curtains and removing posters or furniture from windows, to allow maximum use of daylight. You may find that lights don’t need to be on all of the time.

  5. Design energy saving posters to go up around the school, make them appropriate for each area, asking people to ‘switch off, or ‘turn down’ where possible.

  6. Set up an ‘Eco or Energy’ group, consisting of staff and pupils, to monitor and reduce energy usage in your school. Eco schools gives excellent advice on getting started – see the link on the main webpage.

  7. Allocate a member of staff to make sure that computers are switched off at the end of each day, or install an ‘auto-switch’ off programme to do it for you.

  8. Get staff and children to bring an extra jumper to school during winter, that way those who are cold can warm up, whilst those who are warm enough don’t have to be subject to additional heating – leading to open windows!

  9. The old favourite – walk or cycle to school. Especially during the summer months, when it’s warm and dry. For fitness, health, vitamin D from the daylight, not to mention the reduction in cost, co2 emissions and traffic. Or perhaps get the bus, or share lifts.

  10. Work out your schools carbon footprint by using a Carbon calculator such as the Teachernet: Schools Carbon Calculator opens in a new window. This will enable you to see how much energy you are using, help you to reduce it, and monitor your progress.
