If there is someone living in the property who has a disability and the property has certain adaptations to meet the needs of the disabled person and/or the person with the disabilities uses a wheelchair in the property you may be entitled to a reduction in the amount of Council Tax you have to pay.
The adaptations must be essential or of a major importance to the person with a permanent and substantial disability.
The person with the disability must continue to live in the property.
To qualify there must be either:
- A bathroom or kitchen (that is not the only one in the property) that is used by the disabled person and is essential or of major importance in meeting their needs. Or
- A room (other than a bathroom, kitchen or toilet) that is predominantly used by the disabled person and is of essential or major importance in meeting their needs. Or
- The disabled person need to use a wheelchair indoors and there is space to do so.
Who can apply?
The person who is responsible for paying the Council Tax must apply even if it is another person living in the property who has the disability.
How is the reduction given?
Please complete the application form with every detail you feel will help your case. An inspector from the Council Tax Office will then contact you to arrange an appointment to visit the property. This is to ensure every adaptation has been taken into account.
From 1 April 2000 eligible persons living in a property in Council Tax Band A are also entitled to a reduction.
The reduction will last for as long as the circumstances remain the same.
You can complete your form and return it to the Council Tax team via email.
