My Giant Colouring Book

The Chapman brothers drew their responses to the colouring book pages onto mylar sheets, which were then transferred through a light-sensitive process on to the plates. The resulting images, all - ironically - monochrome, are dense, hallucinatory improvisations that subvert the apparent innocence of the original illustrations. They are rich in art-historical allusions, from medieval images of hell and damnation to Picasso, Surrealism, Abstract Expressionism and Paul McCarthy’s assaults on icons of folk culture. The prints offer a brilliant introduction to the imaginations of two of Britain’s most inventive and subversive artists. The exhibition is part of Hayward Touring-a contemporary art organisation producing exhibitions that tour to galleries, museums and other publicly-funded venues throughout Britain. They collaborate with artists, independent curators, writers and partner institutions to develop and tour imaginative exhibitions that are seen by approximately half a million people in over 100 cities and towns each year. Cockington Craft centre welcomes this part of the tour which will have kicked off its 2012 tour at the V&A Museum of Childhood.

English Youth Ballet's Giselle

First produced at the Paris Opera in 1841, with Carlotta Grisi in the title role, Giselle epitomises the Romantic Ballet period. Originally set in rural Germany it is dramatically based on the legend of the Wilis, spirits of dance-loving brides who have died tragically before their wedding day. Led by the bitter Queen Myrtha they perform their ghostly rites and evilly seek revenge on any man who crosses their path.

The production has been adapted for EYB's large cast by adding extra music from other ballets composed by Adolphe Adam and setting it on an English country estate in 1912. Prince Albert is an army officer peparing for the First World War.
