Child Road Safety - Be Safe Be Seen

As the clocks go back and the nights get longer, the Government’s THINK! campaign is launching ‘Be Safe Be Seen’ to encourage children to make sure they are clearly visible whenever using the roads, especially at night and in conditions with limited visibility.

Did you know?

  • In 2005, 141 children were killed on our roads and 3,472 were seriously injured.
  • 694 child pedestrians and 93 child cyclists were killed or seriously injured in the October–December period of 2002 alone.

How can I help keep my child safe?

  • Make sure that your child can be easily seen, especially at night, on dark days and in bad weather.
  • Explain to your child why they should always wear something bright.
  • Bright or fluorescent clothes show up best by day, especially in dull or misty weather.
  • By night, reflective material is best and shows up in car headlights – remember, fluorescent clothing doesn’t work after dark.
  • It is an offence to cycle at night without a white front light, a red back light and a red reflector at the back, so make sure that your child’s bike is properly equipped and working.

Torbay Council Road Safety Team  send out resources to all schools, childminders, nurseries, pre-schools and play groups.
