Where to find information about the benefits that are available

Department for Work and Pensions (DWP)

The DWP manages national social security benefits for people with long-term health and disabling conditions, including carers. Services are delivered through local and national offices. Each agency has its own charter - available on request.

The Pension Service

Crownhill Court, Tailyour Road, Plymouth PL6 6UE. Telephone: 0845 60 60 265.

Serves people aged over 60. Manages the Minimum Income Guarantee (Pension Tax Credits from Oct 2003) and state retirement pension. Regular information surgeries are provided throughout Torbay by the local service team. For details call (01803) 210633 or see notices in Torbay Council's Connections offices.

Jobcentre Plus

First Contact Centre: 0845 602 1036 (for first time claims only).

Serves people of working age. Manages Jobseeker's Allowance, Income Support and Incapacity Benefit. Also processes first time claims for Carers Allowance.

Disability and Carers Service

Warbreck House, Warbreck Hill Road, Blackpool FY2 0YE

Manages claims for Attendance Allowance (AA), Disability Living Allowance (DLA) and Carers Allowance (CA). For enquiries about existing AA/DLA claims, telephone: 0845 712 3456. For enquiries about existing CA claims telephone: (01253) 856123.

The Social Fund

Clarenden House, Western Way, Exeter EX1 2DA.

Claims for Community Care Grants, Funeral payments, Budgeting Loans and Crisis Loans: Telephone: (01392) 474700. Crisis Loans only: (01803) 356000.

The National Benefit Enquiry Line (for people with disabilities and carers)

9th Floor, Victoria House, Ormskirk Road, Preston PR1 2QP. Telephone: 0800 882200.

Part of the Disability and Carers Service, the office provides benefits advice and information, including the following leaflets:

  • SD4 Caring for Someone? (for people with caring responsibilities (covers Carers Allowance, Home Responsibilities Protection and Income Support)
  • SD1 Sick or Disabled? (for people with mental illness or disability and those who look after them)
  • GL12 Going into Hospital
  • GL15 Help if you live in a Residential Care or Nursing Home.
  • HC11 Help with Health Costs
  • IS20 A Guide to Income Support

Other benefits

Certain specialist benefits are available through other government departments. These are mainly related to industrial or occupational injuries/diseases, including those sustained during military service. Contact the Disability Information Service for further information and contact points.
