Independent Reviewing Service

The Independent Reviewing Unit arranges Statutory Reviews for Children Looked After by Torbay Council and provides Independent Reviewing Officer’s (IRO’s) to chair reviews within legal timescales and to ensure that an appropriate care plan is in place by the Local Authority and that children, young people, their families and others involved in their care are consulted. IRO’s have the authority to refer a case to court if there is considered to be a breach of a child / young person’s human rights.

Our Aims

  • To ensure that children 'looked after' by Torbay are provided with appropriate care in accordance with government guidelines.
  • To ensure that children's care plans for placement, health, education and contact are independently reviewed on a regular basis.
  • To ensure children and their families / carers views are listened to and recorded.

How can I be involved?

  • By attending, where appropriate, review meetings.
  • By completing consultation documents and giving your views.
