The 7th annual Devon Youth Games was held on Saturday 25th June in Teignbridge. Nine local authorities took part including Team Torbay. Paignton Community & Sports College organised the teams for nine different sports including athletics, basketball, girls cricket, disabled swimming, hockey, netball, aquathlon, tag rugby and tennis.
The Devon Youth Games provides a fantastic opportunity for young people from throughout the county to experience the very best sport can offer. For some it is a once in a lifetime opportunity to experience being part of a major multi-sport event; for others it is the start of a successful sporting career; and for others it provides the opportunity for a great day out supporting family and friends.
For further information on the games and when trials will be taking place in Torbay contact Paignton Community & Sports College on 01803 403739.
What happened this year?
This year’s event involved over 1000 children from 9 different local authorities within Devon. The opening ceremony was held at Newton Abbot racecourse where Kate Allenby, Olympic Bronze Medal Pentathlete officially opened the Games. Athletes were involved in aquathlon, athletics, basketball, cricket, hockey, netball, rugby and tennis based over three sites at Stover School, Newton Abbot Leisure Centre and South Dartmoor Community College. In addition to the sporting activities, entertainment had also been provided to keep the participants active all day and to create a fun atmosphere.
Over 120 children represented the Torbay region in the Games. It is fair to say that all our competitors entered into the spirit of the event and had a great time. All of them showed a great deal of effort and determination as well as having an active and enjoyable day. A particular highlight was the performance of the girls cricket team, coached by Kirsty Parker, who collected medals for coming 3rd in their competition.
After the events were completed all competitors went back to Newton Abbot racecourse for the final results. This year Plymouth were the overall winners with West Devon picking up the fair play award. Whilst the overall medal tally for Torbay was relatively small, it was good to see a range of children having such a fun, active day and promoting sport participation within the Torbay Sport Partnership. My thanks go to the Team Managers who gave up their time to coach the teams and to the participants who represented Torbay and were a credit to the region.
