The Youth Games are now established as an annual festival of sport for young people from clubs, colleges and primary schools who are not competing at county or national level.
ITV Westcountry Sports Presenter Mark Tyler and Gemini FM’s Charlie Moseby opened the Games in spectacular style before the Athletes were led off to one of four different venues across Tiverton.
Competitors from Torbay got a taste of success claiming Gold in the Senior Netball event, Silver in the High Fives Netball, Silver in Badminton, Bronze in Tennis, a Gold for Josh Webber in the BMX discipline and a Bronze for Andy Windsor in the Inline Skating discipline.
Other events included, Junior Netball, Girls Cricket, Indoor Athletics, Girls Tag Rugby, Mixed Tag Rugby, Skateboarding, Girls Hockey, Boys Hockey, Volleyball and the Aquathlon (Swim/Run).
Torbay Community Sports Co-ordinator, Kirsty Parker says ‘The Torbay Competitors excelled themselves, the coaches and staff who gave up their spare time to help have provided a really unforgettable day for these young people.’
‘Taking part was the main aim, but to come home with medals is an added bonus’.
‘I would like to say a big thank you to all of my team managers, Glenys Haywood, Sharon Woodmore, Derek Smith, Jo Reed, Helen Wilkinson, Claire Pocock, Sophie Green, Andy Fairbairn, Kate Brown, Bev Jackson, Mary Hill, Laura Love, Steve Duggan, Eric Barber and Ellie Fielding, who without them the Torbay Teams would not have been able to take part.’
‘A special note goes to Sharon Woodmore and Glenys Haywood who coached the Senior Girls Netball Squad to their first Gold since the Games started 7 years ago.’
Overall, Mid Devon won the event with South Hams District Council and Plymouth City Council taking Joint Second place.
Mid Devon also claimed the Fair Play Trophy with Torridge District Council coming in Second place.
The Games were closed by Olympic Rower Ed Coode who made a special appearance on the 2012 Roadshow Bus. The 2012 Roadshow is on a tour of the UK to spread the message far and wide about how everyone can ‘Be Part of 2012’.
