Devon Youth Games 2004

The 6th annual Devon Youth Games was held on Sunday 27th June 2004 in Barnstaple, North Devon.  The games involved 10 local Authorities, 1,500 young competitors took part in 9 sports these included: athletics, basketball, cricket, disabled swimming, hockey, netball, aquathlon, tag rugby and tennis.

The Devon Youth Games provides young people with the opportunity to experience the very best sport can offer.  For some it was the once in a lifetime opportunity to experience being part of a major multi-sport event; for others it was the start of a successful sporting career; and for others it provided the opportunity for a great day out supporting family and friends.

Team Torbay was made up of over 150 young competitors from across the Bay taking part in 7 of the 9 sports.  Torbay achieved 1st position in boys and girls basketball and boys hockey with the girls hockey team coming a very close 2nd place.  The tennis teams achieved a very amicable 3rd and 4th placing.  The two netball teams worked hard and earned a respectable 7th place along with the girls cricket team who also finished an impressive 7th.  The aquathlon was introduced as a new event at this years event and Torbay competitors finished with a 6th and two 10th placings.  The athletics team took part in 6 events and were placed 9th.

Overall Team Torbay finished a very impressive 6th, with Plymouth securing 1st place for the second year running.  Exeter City Council came 2nd with Mid Devon taking 3rd place.

The games also award fair play and emphasises the importance of fair play to all those involved.  Throughout the day teams are awarded points according to the manner in which they compete during each event and are then awarded points.

Team Torbay were placed 4th with North Devon claiming 1st place, Plymouth took 2nd place with East Devon, South Hams and Teignbridge all sharing the 3rd position.

The Devon Youth Games provides a fantastic opportunity for young people from throughout the county to experience the very best sport can offer.  For some it was a once in a lifetime opportunity to experience being part of a major multi-sport event; for others it was the start of a successful sporting career; and for others it provided the opportunity for a great day out supporting family and friends.

The Sports Development Department would like to thank everyone who was part of Team Torbay - the players, team managers, coaches and officials you were an asset to yourselves and Torbay - Well Done!!
