Tree Donation Scheme

Donating a tree can give you the opportunity to create a long lasting tribute of a special occasion, such as a wedding or birth of a new family member.

Your sponsorship helps in contributing to the development of Torbay’s Tree Scene, creating a green environment for yourself, your family and generations in the future.

When to Plant

The main season for tree planting is from November to March. At this time of year trees are in a dormant state and are able to be planted with a minimum of distress to allow good establishment of your tree.

Where To Plant

All of Torbay’s parks and open spaces are potential venues, as are existing tree lined streets. However, it is important that trees fit into the long-term landscaping of the area. Should a site be in danger of over planting, a second alternative venue may need to be chosen.

Type of Tree

A wide range of trees can be planted in Torbay’s warm climate. We would give serious consideration to a donor’s choice of plant. If the choice is unsuitable because of soil conditions etc, assistance in selecting an alternative species would be given or we would be happy to make initial recommendations and supply brief descriptions.

Where specific schemes are taking place in particular parks or open spaces, it is still possible for donors to be involved. Where this is the case donors can select from lists of trees for these schemes and in positions shown on the landscaping proposals.

We are endeavouring to plant trees capable of reaching a good size and having a long life, whilst ornamental trees such as cherries may be acceptable in some locations, it should be remembered that in tree terms these are short lived.

Cost of Donation

The cost of each tree, including stakes, ties etc, and a guarantee of replacement should the tree fail in the year following planting, is from £95.00 + vat (payable in advance of planting).

Should the donor require, it is possible to attend at the time of planting (at a time agreed); the tree will already be inserted into the planting pit and be secured to its stakes. A silver spade is available to allow the donor, friends and relatives to make a token backfill of soil prior to our gardeners finishing the planting. This should avoid unnecessary waiting during what is inevitably a cold and damp time of year.

Important Note for Donors

As the sites for tree planting are for the passive and active enjoyment for all users, it is not permitted to under plant or to place flowers at the planting site. Should you require such a memorial we would respectfully advise the donor to consider a site in the local cemeteries. It is regretted that it will not be possible to allow the fixing of plaques at any donated tree. However, we are pleased to be able to provide a certificate of planting as a keepsake of the event. Should donors require we would be happy to supply an extra copy on request.

Booking a Tree

As we need to prepare our tree requirements to obtain the most competitive price, all tree choices agreed by 31 August will be guaranteed (subject to availability). Extra trees will be purchased at this time and donors booking later than the end of August may be able to select from these. No donations can be accepted after the end of October, although we will be happy to take orders for the following planting season.
