children and young people's library services - A mother and child reading a book together. Visit our Gallery.

Welcome to Torbay Library Services!

All libraries in Torbay have Children's and Teenage sections, including the Mobile Library.

Membership is FREE and you can join at any age. Young members benefit from a free initial loan period on Junior Spoken Word, and there are no overdue charges on borrowed books for those under 16 (do try to bring your books back on time, however, as someone else may be waiting to read them!).

What have we got?

For the very young...

  • Board books for babies – you're never too young.
  • Picture books for under 5s and picture books for older children too.
  • Beginner reads – Great books for when you're learning to read, or when you feel like a short, fun story.
  • Book and cassette packs – good for when you want to be read to.

...and if you're growing up...

  • Stories and novels – whether you like funny stories, scary stories or adventure stories, all your favourite authors are here.
  • Reference books like encyclopaedias, to use in the library. There's lots of information to help with projects, including local history, CD-ROM titles and computers with free Internet access (and remember you can also use books from the adult reference section).
  • Graphic Novels - featuring a galaxy of legends from Batman and Star Wars to Planetary and Sandman.
  • Teenage Collection - Buffy and Angel are here, as well as SVH, Terry Pratchett and heaps more.
  • Career Guides - to help you plan your education - and your life!
  • Large print books and Braille books for children with little or no sight.

...plus...

  • Internet - all children's sections in Torbay libraries have free access to the Internet, although under 7s must be supervised by an adult when using it.
  • Spoken word - Free initial loan period of junior spoken word and language items for those under the age of 16.
  • DVD and Video - check out the range of DVD and video titles for children and young people. Please remember that you will have to pay a charge and that an adult needs to take them out for you on their membership card (when you are 16 you can take them out on your own card). The great thing is that you'll be able to keep them for a whole week, so you can watch your favourites again and again.
