Mapping Open Country Maps

What is on the map?

  • Registered commons (green shading)  
  • Open country (yellow shading) (mountain, moor, heath, down)  
  • No useful purpose (purple shading/purple)  

The first stage of the mapping

  • Draft Map : (on the 13th May 2003 Draft maps for area 6 are available on the website) The map sheets will be post in the two weeks following map issue date of 13th May to the council.  
  • The draft maps are produced using existing datasets and subject to public consultation Public consultation ends three months after the issue date (13th August is the closing date)  

What happens next?

  • Provisional Map
  • : produced following public consultation on the draft map and is  
  • issued 6-8 months after the issue of the draft map  
  • Appeals may be made on the following grounds:-  
  • Land incorrectly shown as registered common land  
  • Land incorrectly shown as open country
  • The boundary of open country has been incorrectly shown i.e. that CA have used their discretion to move boundaries inappropriately
  • Conclusive Map issued 6-12 months after issued of provisional map is the legal record of open country and registered common land
  • All local authorities and national park authorities will be required to hold a copy of the conclusive map relating to their administrative area:
  • The conclusive map is now the legal record of all open access lan
  • The right to walk on the access land start at the commence date
