Support to live independently

Sometimes people need support to help them live independently at home. This does not just mean having somewhere to live but being able to live there safely and happily. Housing Support provided through Supporting People from here-can help you gain the skills and confidence to do this. Support can be provided in supported accommodation such as a hostel or sheltered housing or a support worker could visit you in your own home. This is called floating support.

What kind of support can be given?

Support can include help to:

  • Develop skills such as cooking, cleaning and dealing with mail
  • Get in touch with other services such as doctors, social workers or community organisations
  • Access work and training
  • Deal with personal budgeting, completing benefit forms, debt counselling and welfare rights;
  • Make and maintain social contacts
  • Be aware of home security and safety

Who can be helped?

I need sheltered accommodation

The HUB does not access sheltered housing schemes for older people. If you want to be considered for sheltered accommodation, you need to contact Homefinder Torbay and ask to be put on the waiting list.

How can I get support?

If you think a Supporting People service could help you then you need to contact the new Housing Support Referral Hub. The Hub finds the Supporting People service that you need and/or signposts to other agencies. This means you do not have to apply to lots of different Supporting People services. Your social worker, probation worker, housing worker or another agency can contact the Hub on your behalf or you can contact the Hub directly. The forms you need to complete and guidance on how to complete them can be found in the do it online section of this page. You can either complete them online and return via E-mail, Fax or Post to the Referral HUB at the address on the right hand side of this page.

How can I contact you?

The contact details for the HUB can be found on the contact us panel on right hand side of this page.

Can my housing officer refer me for support?

If you see a Housing Needs Officer or a Resettlement Officer for advice, they will discuss with you your housing needs but will also talk to you about whether you would benefit either from floating support to help you stay in your current home or whether supported accommodation would be the best option for you. If after talking to you, you agree that you need support the Referral HUB will refer you to the service which they feel would best meet your needs.
