My family/friends have asked me to leave or it is not safe for me at home
If you have no other choice but to leave your accommodation you should see if you can stay temporarily with a friend or relative while you consider your options. If not, contact the Council's Housing Needs Service or any of the other agencies listed below. They will be able to give you information and advice.
If you are aged 16 or 17 and are homeless or are worried about becoming homeless or you do not feel safe at home, you should contact Checkpoint in the first instance for advice.
Checkpoint works with Council to help young people who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless. If your family are threatening to evict you, you should contact them for advice as soon as possible.
What help can they give me?
They offer free confidential advice to people aged 11-21 on a number of issues including housing, benefits, family and health issues and also offer counselling.
If you give your permission and if they think it is appropriate to do so, they will contact your family and try to mediate with them so you can return home even if this is only temporarily while you are looking at other options. They will not try to mediate if you have experienced violence or abuse at home.
What happens if I become homeless and Checkpoint is closed?
If you become homeless when Checkpoint is closed, you should contact our Housing Needs Team using the contact details on the right hand side of this page.
If you have a housing emergency outside of office hours, evenings, weekends and Bank Holidays, contact our out of hours team on 01803 524519.
Who should I contact if am over eighteen?
If you are aged eighteen or over, you should contact our Housing Needs Team using the contact details on the right hand side of this page. Again, if your family are threatening to evict you, you should contact us as soon as possible so we can advise you.
If you are aged 18-21, you could also contact Checkpoint, who give advice on a range of issues including housing.
What help can they give me?
Again, if you give your permission and the officer thinks it is appropriate, they will try to mediate with your family. They will not try to mediate if you have suffered violence or abuse at home.
What will I need to bring with me?
If your family has given you a letter asking you to leave, please bring this with you.
