Chewing gum can be difficult and expensive to remove. On our streets, chewing gum is one of the most common forms of staining. Chewing gum is made from natural or synthetic latex which means that it does not degrade quickly and can withstand all weather conditions.
When chewing gum is spat out or dropped it not only looks unsightly but can also stick to shoes and clothing. As with pavements and other surfaces, chewing gum can be very difficult to remove from clothes. When chewing gum is removed from a hard surface, it can leave a stain which can be as unsightly as the gum itself.
As with most cases of littering, the most effective way of tackling chewing gum litter is to prevent it from happening in the first place. The Take a Stand campaign does not suggest that people shouldn’t chew gum, but it does encourage the responsible disposal of gum in litter bins or other suitable containers.
Spitting out or dropping gum is classed as littering. If you are caught littering you may be issued with a Fixed Penalty Notice for £75. Fixed Penalty Notices are issued as an alternative to prosecution. This means that if you receive a Notice and choose not to pay it, you could face a higher fine or be prosecuted which will result in a criminal conviction.
