Junior Street Wardens make a positive difference

The Street Warden scheme has been joined by a group of children wanting to make a difference in their community. The Junior Street Warden scheme aims to:

  • Improve relationships within communities, bringing together children from different backgrounds and breaking down the barriers between generations
  • Make the local environment a cleaner and safer place to live by encouraging children and young people to take ownership of their surroundings, respecting them and looking after them
  • Have fun though doing something positive.

The Street wardens already work with children within schools to increase their awareness of the quality of the local environment and the impact of anti-social behaviour. Having talked to young people, they really want to help and make a difference. Since the warden scheme has started young people have always supported the wardens in any community events that have been undertaken.

The children have been given their own identity, with shirts and hooded tops, trying to help dispel the belief that young people are not positive and up to mischief. Both don the JSW Crew logo printed in graffiti font.

The scheme was launched in October 2006 by inviting local children to an adventure away day. The event not only built on team working skills, but also provided an opportunity to find out what the children would like to do as Junior Wardens. The themes discussed were: the Environment, Helping Others, the Community and Reward.

The Junior Street Wardens will have the opportunity to gain the Making a Difference Award, run by the Torbay Youth Service. This is a nationally recognised aware, which rewards planning and learning by young people.

Regular events and practical hands-on activities will be held where it is hoped that those who take part will educate their peers and family to foster a sense of local responsibility.
