One definition of a pest is the wrong animal in the wrong place at the wrong time. Proper HYGIENE and PROOFING should keep pests out of our 'place' without the overuse of chemicals.
Hygiene means cleaning and disinfecting, the safe storage of refuse and not allowing too much food to spill off the bird table. Proofing involves filling gaps and crevices in walls, mending drains and denying pest’s access, perching space or harbourage.
If this fails, before chemical treatment is considered a risk assessment should be carried out. Is the pest a serious hazard to health or property? A wasp at the bottom of the garden can be annoying. But it is worth bearing in mind that the nest will die naturally in October/November. Also, wasps are great pest controllers in their own right. A typical wasp’s nest will consume thousands of other pest insect from the flowers and vegetables in your garden.
