Be Inspired! Get Involved!

Engaged LogoWho are we?
Hi! The participation pages of the Torbay Council website have been written by us, Engaged.  We are a group of young people aged 11 – 18 who have come together to tell young people in Torbay about your right to be involved in making decisions about things that happen in Torbay.

Engaged is made up of three different groups – TAG (Torquay Action Group), TNT (Teen Network Torbay) and TOFFY (Torbay Opportunity Fund For Youth) – you will find out a bit more about us as you read on!

Why should we get involved?
In 1990 the United Nations wrote a list (or articles as they call them) of children and young peoples rights called “The United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child”.

Child

Human rights are those rights that we have to have to be able to live as human beings – basic standards without which people cannot survive and live and grow with dignity.  The United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child states that all children and young people, whatever their situation, abilities, beliefs and backgrounds have the right to be involved in making decisions about things that affect them:

Article 12: “state parties shall assure to “the child who is capable of forming his or her own views the right to express those views freely” in all matters affecting the child, the views of the child being given due weight in accordance with the age and maturity of the child.”

Why we think you should get involved

You can make things better – giving you a say in how services can be improved should make sure these services really meet your needs.

You can help the community because you’re important! – You are an important part of the community and you have things to say.  Getting involved means you can make the community a better place for everyone.

You can learn new skills – Being involved now will help you to have more skills and build your confidence.  You will also learn how decisions are made, how things work and how you can get involved now and in the future.

Get rewarded! – By taking part you may get the chance to go to special events, team building days and residentials. You can also get awards and certificates that could help you get to college or work in the future.  Getting involved now can help you get a job or go to college in the future!
