Data Protection - The Principles

There are 8 principles which help ensure your information is handled properly.  Personal data should only be processed in accordance with these principles.  The principles state information must be:
  1. Fairly and lawfully processed
  2. Processed for specified purposes
  3. Adequate, relevant and not excessive
  4. Accurate and where necessary, kept up to date
  5. Not kept for longer than is necessary
  6. Processed in accordance with individuals rights
  7. Kept secure and protected from loss, damage, or unauthorised access
  8. Not transferred overseas without adequate protection
